5.0 out of 5 stars Best portable speaker system! By Donald Bruce Jones

I spent countless hours researching portable speaker systems. After reading many web site and owner reviews I narrowed my choices down to four models. The first model was the Altec Lansing InMotion im7. I wasen’t able to find this model in any store so I could listen to the sound quality for myself, so I eliminated it. The others were also Altec Lansing based on good reviews. First up was the InMotion im600, Second was the m602 and last the Bose SoundDock Portable. My final decision came down to the ability to listen to these three models side by side.
There wasen’t any real comparison after a listen to the Bose. They blew the other two away. Great base and great highs. I was sold. I do realize the Bose are pricy but like most people out there, these are not my first IPOD speakers but the will be my last. Go for it and get the best first. The Bose are the way to go!

JBL On Stage II Speaker and Docking Station for iPod (Black)

amazinggifst-ipod dock2Set your music free as only JBL can do it with the black On Stage II iPod speaker system. The compact yet powerful high-performance system employs a quartet of Odyssey neodymium full-range drivers to fill your room with clear, accurate sound and all the volume you (and your friends and neighbors) can handle. It’s the perfect accessory for bedrooms, smallish apartments, basements, and any other space where a full-size speaker system is pure overkill. The On Stage II incorporates Apple’s universal iPod dock adapter, which works with most docking versions of the iPod, including the iPod video 5G and 5.5G and the iPod nano 1G and 2G. Simply slide your iPod into the dock and you’re set–no additional cords to connect or adapters to fuss with. As an added convenience, the On Stage II also offers an auxiliary input for connecting a variety of other portable audio devices, including the iPod shuffle, personal MP3 and CD players, desktop and laptop computers (all platforms), and satellite radio receivers. As long as your portable audio device has a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack connection, you can play the audio through your On Stage II speaker.

As a bonus, the On Stage II comes with a wireless remote control, giving you the freedom to enjoy your music from across the room or in another room–up to 50 feet away (including through walls). The system itself, meanwhile, includes easy-to-use touch controls for the volume and mute, and even remembers your last volume setting after it shuts down. The system, which offers a frequency response of 80 Hz to 20 kHz, measures 7 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall and weighs 1 pound. It’s also backed by a one-year warranty.

4.0 out of 5 stars JBL build quality, style and sound at a good price. By Samuel ChellI’d recommend the JBL On Stage II for several reasons: the material and build quality along with the attention to detail; the unique, eye-catching saucer design along with a handy, sensitive remote switch; “tight” audio, with exceptionally crisp treble frequencies and adequately deep but not boomy bass.

The cons: Even though the bass is fuller and less distorted than on its smaller sibling, it lacks the convenience of the JBL On Stage Micro, which operates on both batteries and AC (moreover, the power adapter on the Micro is smaller and lighter); the On Stage II has been on the market for a while (2006) and is not fully compatible with recent Apple equipment (e.g. video transport for a Nano 3G or iPhone synching). It plays and charges my Nano 3g and Classic 160 gig but only plays my Touch 2g. In a pinch, it will work fine without the included adapters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great with minor issues By Peter J. Roberts

This is a great little box in almost every way, and so it is more useful, I think, to say what the downside is.
The CD player remembers where it was only during the pause-state, and the pause-state doesn’t last very long. Turn it off, and you’ve lost your place. This is a minor issue, because a small pad and pencil an resolve it.
Considering that the external FM antenna, in my location, does not have to be extended, it would have been nicer to have an FM antenna built-in and just have the external antenna for those of us far from a signal source.
Other than that, my wife has been delighted to be able to listen to any kind of current CD, her iPod, or a USB flash drive with music files on it (the drive has to be formatted as a Windows flash drive, which can be done on an OS X Mac as well as on a Windows PC), or listen to the radio.
The sound is very pleasant to listen to and is high quality considering the size of the speakers. In fact we intend to get a second one for another location in the house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it claims.By R. M. McManus

This is actually exactly what I was looking for in an iPhone dock: Decent size, decent sound (when the artificially heavy Bass Boost is switched off), works with the iPhone 3G with no GSM noise. The sound is good, but not great. It’s not going to replace my hi-fi, but for listening to music while falling asleep or listening to a ballgame while cooking, it’s perfect. I use it with the FlipClock app as a clock radio. So, yeah – if you’re looking for a decent iPhone 3G dock solution, this seems like the only rational choice. Believe me, I looked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superlative sound and convenience, but no remote switch.

In answer to some questions, this stereo has a conventional audio input, so you can easily use it with sound sources other than an iPod. As someone has observed, the Cyber Acoustic web page claims the Nano 3g can’t be charged by the CA-421 dock. Au contraire! When using electrical power and the included dock adapter, I had no difficulty charging a Nano 3g with this CA-421 dock. In fact, contrary to the company’s description, it did the same with a Classic and the Touch (I don’t own an iPhone, though.) Since writing the following, I’ve “gone through” other speakers, including the most popular rechargeable Altec Lansing and Logitech, both of which balk at playing the newest Touch. This inexpensive iRhythms model actually sounds competitive and continues to be the only portable I can depend on (no doubt due to the well-constructed adapters and the provision for using regular AA alkalines). As for the outdoors volume limitation, even the very pricey, much lauded Tivoli iPal falls flat on its face when used outside. These battery-operated machines simply are not backyard party animals. Finally, these are far and away the best labeled and designed adapters I’ve seen.
